Origin of the Japanese Language

Some propose that Japanese is a member of the Ural-Altaic language family, others that it is Malayo-Polynesian, and still others that it is a Tamil language. The number and variety of theories abound. Japanese is also seen to be close to Korean in the grammatical order of subject, object, and verb. From this we can imagine that Japanese has been strongly influenced by Asian languages, but still there is no definitive answer as to its origins.

However, from the point of view of the written language, it should be noted that through long cultural exchange with China, the Japanese language has incorporated a great deal of vocabulary form Chinese, developed phonetic letters (kana) based on Chinese characters, and has come today to be written with a combination of Chinese characters and kana.
