Ine : rice plant

Rice is the principal food for Japanese people and is prepared by threshing ine, the rice plant, and by milling its seeds. It is one of the three major cereals in the world together with wheat and corn. The hot temperature and high humidity in summer in Japan are suitable for cultivating rice. Therefore, some rice species native to tropical countries that required much water were imported more than a thousand years ago and became established as a main source of food. Since then, various breeding methods has been applied to develop productive species. A scene of rice paddies is an archetypal view of Japan imprinted in the hearts of Japanese people.
