Japan is composed of four large islands—Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu—and some 6,800 smaller islands. It stretches in an arc from north to south over 3,500 kilometers, and its coastline is 34,000 kilometers long.

How big is Japan?

The area of Japan is some 380,000 square kilometers, about 1.5 times that of the United Kingdom. However, it is only 1/25 of the United States, even smaller than California’s 410,000 square kilometers.
